Re: xp or windows 7. cert.

Considering most companies still heavily utilize XP, I'd say it's of great value.

Re: xp or windows 7. cert.

MCDST also gives a very good base for the support exams for windows 7. You learn HOW to troubleshoot, at least, that is part of the goal.

If the W7 exam is like that for Vista - the XP one will stretch you far more. So do the XP one and the W7 will seem like a gift.

Not quit. The W7 exam is harder than the Vista exam. Vista was a laugh.

I see W 7 adopted wider and wider in the end- user world, so if your decide to pursue helpdesk role by all means go for the Windows 7 exam. They will all have to upgrade to 7 at certain point, xp can only carry on so far.
In the server room however, Windows Server 2003 seems to be set to last a tad longer than anyone expected, so MCSE title is still a very valid goal to pursue. But if my goal would be MCSE, then I'd choose to forego the helpdesk exam and focus solely on MCSE exams.

Who says? They don't *have* to upgrade to anything. Windows XP works just fine.

Yep: until 2020.

Windows XP isn't disappearing anytime soon.

Eh? I expected it would last this long, and I expect that it will last a whole lot longer, as do most techs who work with Windows Server 2003. In fact, many companies still use Windows 2000 Server in their infrastructure.

I don't mean to come down hard on you, Varelg... that is not my intention. But that's some potentially bad advice you're giving out. And considering you don't have ANY Windows Server 2003 experience, do you think you're qualified to give this advice?

Like I said in one of your threads, the MCSE is designed for people who have at least a year of real-world IT experience administering servers in a multi-site, multi-server environment. If ITpatrick82 doesn't yet have that experience, he is exactly right in pursuing the MCDST certification, because getting the MCSE would overcertify him for his experience level. And this is NOT a good thing.
