Post Obama Urged to Take Immediate Cyber-security Steps

By Roy Mark at eweek.com - 6th November 2008

President-elect Barack Obama has promised to appoint a national cyber-security adviser. According to a report by the Defense Science Board, the cyber-security czar will inherit a civilian and military information infrastructure that is ill-prepared for advanced cyber-attacks, such as denial of service and malicious modification of information. The United States' vulnerability to cyber-attacks in space presents a particular challenge for the new leaders.

President-elect Barack Obama will inherit a Department of Defense increasingly concerned about advance cyber-threats to the nation's civilian and military information infrastructures, according to a report by the Defense Science Board.

supag33k comments: Apparently in a related piece of news - both the McCain and Obama campaigns where advised by White House officials that their campaign's IT resources had both been attacked by an unknown attacker in recent weeks.

Focus your efforts on one certification objective at a time, preferably the one you are weakest on at that point in time, making the objective something you understand well.

"The United States has highly sophisticated experts, and [when] they have been asked to penetrate our own systems their record of success is 100 percent."

I wonder how many of these experts are are actually hired to pen test / crack the systems.

Bottom line - If your network is conncted to the internet nothing is safe / secure.

Better still: remove the powercord and do NOT switch on your computer.

Better still, Just don't use a computer. Keep everything on paper in a vault. With plenty of booby traps and other stuff to keep people out.

Is this like "Pigs In Space", but without Miss Piggy?

***Sigh...I miss the Muppet Show. Beaker and Animal were the best. And those old guys. Where did good TV go?***

Re: Obama Urged to Take Immediate Cyber-security Steps

America don't need help from terrorists to bring their craft down in balls of flame, age is doing the fleet no favors. Its the most dangerous of jobs but I would give my life’s efforts to it in a heartbeat. I volunteer to measure the temperature of black holes wherever I am sent. NASA, its time to stop stuffing about and show the world the super craft that cost the American public billions.

Barack Obama already chants a cliche for what needs to be done rather than what is proposed to be done, much like they guy we have here. I dearly hope he lives up to one 5th of what the world needs of him.

I will label myself a dog for wanting the other guy to get home... Nothing personal Barack but the other guy touched my soul with the defiance he displayed to his torture and captivity.

For once it seems that there are two potentially great men at the forefront of political life in America.

In a true democracy the person running might actually matter. In a pseudo-democratic party-based system, especially ones that limit which parties can participate (like no Baathists can run for office in Iraq), you're really voting for the policies of the party. Only people who consistently tow the party line will even get the chance to run and be elected.

So I couldn't, in good conscience, vote for the party that let the new economy rot and claimed economic expansion by getting their banker buddies to pump-and-dump old economy real estate. There was also zero anti-trust enforcement. So all the job creating small businesses are gone now, replaced by anti-competitive monopolies, oligopolies and cartels that will never create anything but huge bureaucracies and dis-economies of scale. We don't even have a chance of competing in the global economy nowadays. And giving the guys at the top more money won't fix anything.

Plus Obama wasn't white. After living in the most racist city in the country, Omaha, Nebraska, I have a new appreciation for such distinctions.

Turns out the south ain't so bad after all. Racism is much worse in the mid-west.
