70-290 Lab Setup

Hi all.

Newbie here, finally starting my MCSE 2003 soon, just waiting for my MS Press books to arrive from Amazon.

Anyways, first course/exam will be 70-290. And i'd like to get as prepped as possible for it, which includes setting up any test lab i may need.

Can anyone tell me if the lab setup is part of the course, or if you have to set it up prior to starting.

And if so, what is it? I've read mixed messages. (e.g 2x Windows 2002 Servers with x amount of RAM and x amount of disk space and what IP range for the network)

I'll be building the lab setup on my work laptop (64bit Windows 7, 4GB and VMWare Workstation)

Any info would be greatly appreciated, or links too. Thanks

Re: 70-290 Lab Setup

Welcome to MCSE World.

You are already a step ahead of the game just by knowing you need a test lab AND by having VM Ware workstation ready to go as well. Inside the initial pages of the 70-290 MS Press book you will find information about what systems you should set up and basic configuration informaiton which will allow you to do all the labs as well.

You should be able to run all the systems the book describes for your test lab inside your virtual environment. Not a bad deal at all.

Good luck and feel free to post up any questions you have during your studies.

All the best,

J.

Re: 70-290 Lab Setup

Hey guys, new here as well. Yah I am doing something similar. I have my desktop here with some VM Ware and enough horsepower to run a server or two and some client OS for testing/Lab setup. I had taken the MCSA classes a few years ago and I never studied up and went for certification. Regardless I have the microsoft press books along with the lab manuals and O'reiley MCSE in a nutshell to help out, so I'm here to help aid my way into certification and to keep motivated to press on. Hope all works out great and then onto the 2008 certs =)

Re: 70-290 Lab Setup

Well i finally got my books, so figured i'd post on what the 70-290 lab setup is, just incase anyone else might search for it.

2 xWindows 2003 Server Enterprise (just CD1, don't install CD2 (R2) yet)

4GB of disk space, and create just a 3GB partition to install Windows onto.
All default settings.

Name the first server "Server01" and set it to be a Domain Controller for domain "contoso.com"

Name the second server "Server02" and set it to just be a member of the contoso domain.

Hey Bigdook, did you use the same CD when installing Win2k on both computers?

Re: 70-290 Lab Setup

Yup.

It's locked to 180days, so once you register it starts kicking down from that date, so AFAIK it will stop working 180days from first registered, so u can install it multiple times.

I've got 4 installs of the same CD now. No dramas.
