I'm about 1/4 on my study to get my 70-640. I"m very new to certifications and exams. What is the appropriate time to sign up for the exam? Should I wait until I'm done studying and then sign up or sign up first and then study until that date. Let's say I'll be done with the material+practice on August/31/2010. When should I sign up for the exam? Please advise.

First, I want to give thanks for all of the help that I have received on this forum to date. This is a great resource for those striving to reach their certification goals.

As you may have read, I have my MCSE on Windows 2000 and I did not attempt the original upgrade exams, so I am forced to complete 290, 291, 293, and 294 to upgrade. Thus far, it has not been a bad experience, especially since I am taking these exams with seven years of experience with the product, whereas I only had about six months experience with Windows 2000 when I took those exams, and far fewer years of total experience.

I became rather bored studying 291 as it is focused on networking, and beyond MCSE, I also hold Network+, CCNA, and CISSP (which all cover networking). So, I took my studying to those aspects of the product that are rarely utilized in Windows, as they are often handled by network devices: RRAS, Routing, and IPSec. I also brushed up on some specifics of topics such as authentication protocols and WINS nodes. I only put a few hours of study in for the exam and I scored 892 on the exam.

Since that exam, I have found myself spending more time looking for study resources than actually studying. I have looked through the Syngress book, the Passport book, and the All-in-One. In addition, I have purchased the Sybex book, but I am still awaiting its arrival. I have also started the Skillsoft online express study, but I realized it is just ripped from the Syngress book. The books have been a drag to read, I think mostly because I know the material so well. So, I am looking to do what I did for the 291 exam; I plan on revisiting those same topics that I studied for 291, and also throw in Certificate Services and a quick skim of Clustering and NLB.

I can do subnetting in my head quite easily. I know DNS, DHCP, and many other protocols backwards and forwards, and I know how they work in Windows Server, both in general and specifically for Active Directory integration.

Those that have walked this path, what is your take on these two exams, specifically, and my strategy? Thanks again.

EDIT: I failed to mention that I have this exam scheduled for tomorrow, 27JUL2010. :)

Hi

Not long back my company required a number of employees to obtain MCSE status for certification of which I was one. I had a number of Microsoft qualifications previous and dabble a little with our day to day domain stuff so over the course of a year or so I passed the exams required. I was also required to pass a number of Exchange exams to be MCITP or something like that.

But here's the kicker, I work for a Cisco Gold partner in a primarily Cisco voice environment dealing with Callmanager, Gateways, UCCX as well as other 3rd party products such as Verint Witness, Arc Systems, Zeacom to name a few. I get minimal exposure to Microsoft stuff as we do not support customers domains but will be in the future as we are moving into Datacentre hosted solutions and pushing for Microsoft partnership. I don't feel my skills are up to scratch if I'm honest, I add users to the domain, unlock passwords, maybe give someone rights to another persons calendar or email blah blah

The plan - So I am asking the good people here if they know of any links or materials such as labs to setup ranging from basic to advanced both MCSE and Exchange. I have a beast of a server I bought running VMWare ESX-i and can knock 2 birds with one stone solidifying my mcse knowledge whilst learning this VMware product at the same time which my company also will require skillset in.
Examples of what I'm hoping is out there based on how I learnt my CCNA. During my course we had labs, setup a connection from router A to router B. As time went on the labs would get switches chucked in, then vlans would turn up, then inter-vlan routing and the way it was done with Cisco just engrained the info in your head very well as each lab was a step on from the last one until you had a full ccna level network running.

So please, if anyone can advise/help out on where I can find similar difficulty tiered labs get in touch. All advice welcome

After a few practice exams on MeasureUp, I got to thinking....
For those who have taken this exam, do you find it better to read the question first, then go look for details about it in the case study rather than reading the entire case study first? Being a slow reader, I'm afraid of a bunch of worthless fluff inside the case study that will just slow me down.

I know that the MeasureUp tests are supposed to mimic the actual test closely with original case studies and such, but I have found that most of the info to answer the question is already in the question, rather than in the case study.

I know it would be nice to have all the info ahead of time, but info gets lost and jumbled after reading all this and I most likely will have to go find it again anyway.

Thoughts?

I have posted a few times about the discount vouchers that Microsoft is offering through Prometric. The current promotion is offering exam vouchers...

I have posted a few times about the discount vouchers that Microsoft is offering through Prometric. The current promotion is offering exam vouchers at 55% off, or $60 USD and includes a second shot; this promo is through the end of September. It is a very good offer that I have used to pass 290 and 291. The promo is geared towards students as the stipulations require that you provide a student ID at the testing center (although I have not had to do this, even though I do have a valid student ID). Exams are from the 072 series instead of the 070 series, but they are the same tests.

In any event, I was attempting to schedule 293 for early this coming week and the Prometric representative could not find the exam. After further investigation, I found out that the promotion is geared toward more entry level certifications. Exams included are (for the context of this discussion):

MCSA:
270
284
290
291
299
680

In addition, they include nearly all of the exams that you may wish to take for MCITP, including the MCSE to MCITP Enterprise Administrator upgrade exam, but it does exclude the PRO Enterprise Administrator exam itself.

Hopefully no one else gets this shock. The voucher also includes the 073 series, but these do not include the free second shot. There may also be additional restrictions on the 073 series. If anyone has any insight into the 073 series, that would be great. I know that it is supposed to be limited to IT Academy students. It does include the excluded in the 072 series.

Alright, we all know that there is some exam overlap. I am working with a friend of mine to help him create a short "critical path" to MCSE and setting him up with an easier transition to MCITP SA and/or EA. Since he has no Microsoft exams at this point, he is working on a clean slate. He has years of experience with Windows Server 2003. So, I am suggesting that he go with Windows 7 for the client exam, since it will count for MCITP as well, and since my suggestions are geared for the job market, seeking the MCSE:Security specialization is also in the works. Further, as many of you know, I am in the process of finally updating my MCSE from 2000 to 2003 and I also intend on doing the security specialization (as well as messaging).

So, 291 and 293 have a lot of obvious overlap... they are both named network infrastructure for a reason. However, in my limited study for 293, I have seen a significant emphasis on security in the material. So, I cracked open (virtually, since it is on my Kindle) the book I have for 299 and wouldn't you know it... it covers security templates, computer roles, IPSec, VPN, Certificates...

Now, I do not have material for 298, but I would imagine that it has significant overlap with 299. So, here is my recommended course of action for him, and I will be using it as best applicable for me:

70-680 Windows 7
70-290 Managing and Maintaining a W2K3 Environment

Then the block of:
70-291 Implementing, Managing and Maintaining a W2K3 Network Infrastructure
70-293 Planning and Maintaining a W2K3 Network Infrastructure
70-299 Implementing and Administering Security in a W2K3 Network
70-298 Designing Security for a W2K3 Network

And finally:

70-294 Planning, Implementing, and Maintaining a W2K3 AD Infrastructure

Is there a better way to group these?

I'm new here. I'm starting to study for my MCITP Server Admin. Just want to say hi and appriciate all your help for my future questions.

Let's break the ice by a question. :)

I've been reading the MS self-pace book for 70-640. I also checked out the sample material on Trainsignal website. I'm wondering if anyone use Trainsignal for their study material? If yes, is it worth the money? Would you recommand it or the MS books would be enough?
Thanks.

When I did my MCSE 2000, I used a large stack of the Syngress books by the Shinder's. It seemed to be a decent enough set as I was able to use them as my only reference material and I passed the exams. However,I had the Sybex books for 70-290 and 70-291 and I really like them. I have the Syngress books for 70-293 and 70-294 and I just don't feel that they are of the same caliber. Is it just an odd perception thing or is it just how preparation for 70-293 is? I have also skimmed the Passport book for 70-293, and it seemed awkward to me, as well. Each book suggests that 70-293 is a different style exam than Microsoft has previously released. Is that fluff and hyperbole? Would it be worth pursuing the Sybex books? If so, I will hit up a half-priced book store and look for the latest edition. Thanks.

Hi guys and gals,

I'm Bod, and I'm finally starting on the road to my 2008 Server Administrator cert. I'm a IT support engineer, and the company I work for have been slowly modifying my role into one that's more hardware than OS. I've been supporting HP c-Class enclosures recently which is not really my thing, so I'm heading down the MCITP route with a view to moving on and back to what I enjoy.

I expect it'll be a long slog as I'm doing self-study only, and with 3 small children it'll be tricky to keep distractions at bay. Perhaps I should invest in a taser?

Anyway, I hope I can contribute here as much as I will be asking dumb questions!

Laters,
Bod.

i have been tasked to a final year project. One of the part i keep getting stuck is the question of:

if i am given a public IP by the school. How do i make use of ICMP to do network discovery?

The first thing that came to my mind is the dijkstra algo. But how? To be more exact i want to be able to do a trace route to every public gateway on the global internet and know which country those gateways are from?

Am on desperate needs and any help is greatly appreciated.

This was originally set to expire at the end of June 2010. You must use the following webpage to create a voucher and then CALL Prometric to purchase your exam and schedule it, as the testing centers cannot schedule the 072 series exams. It is the same test as the 070 series, just a different pricing module. The site indicates that you must take the exam before the deadline, but that is only true if you want/need to take advantage of the free second shot voucher, otherwise you have a year from the date of purchase. In the US, the exams cost $60 each. So, if have a ways to navigate your certification track, you may want to stock up on vouchers. This is geared towards students and you expected to present a valid student ID to the testing center, but from my experience they don't even check this (your mileage may vary).

When I was doing my MCSE 2000, 70-216 Windows 2000 Network Infrastructure was the beast exam of the series. It seems that 70-291 is the equivalent, and it is my next exam to take. I have finally just cracked open my copy of the Sybex study guide for this (the author gave it to me as a pre-published copy in 2003)... well, I used the eBook version on the CD and loaded it on my Kindle. Anyhow, it seems to map up, but it doesn't appear to cover Certificate Services. Is this correct? Are there any other glaring differences?

I am going to give this a little glance tonight with my night cap, and then it is off to bed. I figure I will want to take this exam within the month (likely within the next two weeks).

EDIT: Yuck... I think I am entirely skipping chapter one... OSI model and TCP/IP... I cannot recall how many times I have studied this between Network+, original MCSE, CCNA, and CISSP.... I know networking, thanks. :)

So, for my entire career I've been a loner study wise. I read whatever documentation/books are avaliable, I take some practice exams, and then go in and take the test and I pretty much always do it alone.

However; now I'm preparing for a certification that is a bit more robust in it's requirements and am trying to figure out how to bust out of my loner ways. How do you study with someone else? I know it sounds odd, but in my mind it's tough for me to imagine doing it different. Does anyone here do exactly the opposite? IE, they enjoy preperaing along with someone else? how do you actually study? At what points do you actually interact? I was thinking maybe some sort of presentation type deal, pick topic areas and present on it and have your pals pick it to pieces?

Make sense at all? Any thoughts appreciated.

Although I never intended to study a bunch, I haven't done enough to feel comfortable. I have the Sybex book for the 70-290, and I have finished about 50% of it. I have been using Win2K3 since it came out... so I feel pretty comfortable in that regard, and I am a Microsoft exam veteran, so I don't think I am bad off there. I just need to knock out the MCSE 2003 and specializations, as my employer is throwing yet another task at me... training and certification on Juniper... something I had not anticipated. I have never used Juniper gear, so it will be fun, but I can't imagine it is very different from Cisco gear as it is a company created by former Cisco folks. Anyhow, I have four exams for MCSE 2003, and hopefully only 3 after today.
