I've got the Site Rules updated, just to give the moderators and Cert Cop a bit more teeth with which to bite spammers and dumpers. You'll be forced to accept the site rules before you can make your first post....a 20 second counter will appear and then you'll be able to acknowledge the rules. As long as you don't clear your cookies, you should only get prompted once. I haven't tested it to see what happens if you log out and log in, but I assume it will make you acknowledge it again).
Once you acknowledge the rules, you will end up back looking at the rules. Just hit BACK in your browser to get back to where you started. I'm working on getting it to dump you back to where you started, but that's a bit off I'm sure.
Sorry for the small pain this will cause, but it's for the best overall.
Thanks. Feel free to post feedback about this change....

i read your post, and i figured you meant that one would be confronted with this during signup, but i found out it's displayed before creating a new thread! isn't that a bit too much? i understand your reasoning for doing this, but i think you can trust both user base as well as your mods to play fair and to keep the site clean.
by the way, it doesn't work very well yet. i wanted to create a new thread, and i got the site rules, complete with the countdown, the check box and the submit button, but after this i was brought back to the static site rules page (without the countdown). i didn't get the new thread page.
[edit] i went back to the subforum, and now i immediately get the new thread page...???

I think it's needed. We have way too many new users who signup and then start posting crap right away. Now I can at least I told you so.
As for the not taking you back to the originating page...yes, I see that, I'll look at fixing that later. It does what I need it to. Once you accept, you'll not be faced with it again unless you clear your cookies...so it really is only a one time pain in the butt.

Looks good to me. Happened to me too, but I was responding to a thread. After accepting the rules, I got the rule page again. I simply backed up and hit Reply again.

DP,
How about giving an example or two of copyright material that is now verbotten here? dslreports.com won't even accept quoted news reports from online magazines or newspapers, even if attribution is given. You have to paraphrase the story and then provide a link to it.

I'll have to work on that. For now, I'll call 'em as I seem 'em. It'll be pretty obvious. One thing I typically don't have any issue with is copying one paragraph from a source and quoting it in a post as long as full credits including URL are given.

Ok. That sounds good to me. I was just curious as to what the rules were going to be on this as the site rules were pretty vague.

Agreed, but that just gives me more room to lay the smack down. Common sense is king here.

Asked by Tomshawk...
when agreeing to the forum rules,
2A) Is there a way to agree to the rules and hit submit instead of waiting for the time limit to expire?
2B) Shouldn't it redirect to the page you were in, so you can post and not have to go find it again, just saying.
A) Sure is, but I need to make sure that someone at least has the chance/motivation to read them...hence the timer. It's a one shot deal unless you clear your cookies.
B) Yes, I'm working on that.
